Gerrit Rietveld designed the Utrecht Armchair in 1935, for the department store Metz & Co. in Amsterdam, orienting the design with a view to extended distribution.
The Utrecht Armchair is characterised by its constructivist design: volumes are incorporated to form an original, futuristic seat. A soft, airy architecture with a comfortable, soft and always supported seat, a synthesis of experimentation and comfort. A distinguishing feature are the armrests, whose geometric and angular lines contrast with the soft lines of the seat itself.
In addition to the Utrecht armchair, the family also includes the curved three-seater sofa and two-seater sofa, all with a steel support structure and upholstery characterised by a horse-shoe or zigzag stitching.
